Nintendo switch black friday best buy11/14/2023 It’s also compatible with USB PD, which is lucky, as Quick Charge 4 hasn’t had as much love from power bank manufacturers as the old Quick Charge 3 standard, with most standardising around USB PD. The most common is Quick Charge 4, which pushes out a maximum 21V and 4.6A for 100W of output. ![]() Not all USB PD power banks can push out that much juice you’ll often find them limited to 15W, 27W, 45W or the maximum 100W, but even 27W will cover you for fast charging on a wide range of smartphones and tablets.īeyond that, there are Qualcomm’s Quick Charge standards. Most also support the USB Power Delivery (PD) 3 standard, which increases the maximum voltage and current to deliver up to 100W of power – enough to charge a lightweight laptop at a decent speed. All power banks and smartphones support the USB BC 1.2 standard, which can deliver up to 7.5W over USB-A or 15W over USB-C. At those speeds, even a high-capacity charger can recharge fully in three to four hours.Īs for charging your devices, you’ll usually have a choice of USB-A and USB-C ports, with the latter supporting the fastest USB PD charging standards. This means your power bank will often recharge faster when connected to a suitable fast charger, at anywhere from 20W to 60W. One advantage of this shift to USB-C is that power banks now support USB PD for faster charging. Don’t worry if you don’t have the required cable, as one will usually be provided in the box. Most power banks now use a USB-C port to recharge, although some models will have a micro-USB port as well to ensure compatibility with older chargers. READ NEXT: The best smartphones to buy What else should I look out for? The advantage is that you’ll be able to top up multiple devices, often simultaneously, and you’ll have enough charge to keep them going for a whole weekend or even longer. USB-C with Quick Charge 4 and USB-PD will be a given, making up for the fact that you’re carrying a heavier brick of a charger. Splash out more than £30 and you can bag an even bigger power bank, with capacities starting out at 20,000mAh and going all the way up to 26,800mAh or more. However, you’ll also have much faster charging, with Quick Charge 4 and USB PD. You may get an increase in size and weight to match 20,000mAh batteries can be roughly the size of a big-screen smartphone, but they’re also a good 50% heavier. ![]() Spend £18 to £30 and you’re looking at power banks with a 10,000-20,000mAh capacity and better connectivity, with USB-C connections now pretty much standard. At the upper end of this range, though, you’ll have sufficient capacity to recharge your phone or give a tablet a decent boost – and you can find one the size of a smartphone or a Mars Bar for around £12 to £18. These days we’d avoid anything below 5,000mAh, as it won’t have enough charge to refuel most recent smartphones. The cheapest and smallest power banks will have a capacity of between 2,500mAh and 10,000mAh. The rules are simple enough: the less you spend, the lower the capacity and the slower the power bank will charge. How to choose the best power bank or charger for you What kind of power bank should I buy?īasically, you’re trying to balance four factors: size, speed, capacity and price. We’ll run you through the different specs and what to look for, then point you towards the best power banks on the market. ![]() With so many brands and models to choose from, which one should you buy? We’re here to help. Tablets, digital cameras and Bluetooth speakers can often do with a top-up, and a decent power bank is a must-have accessory if you love playing on a Nintendo Switch. And it’s not only smartphones that can benefit. ![]() In fact, with bigger power banks, you can get away for a weekend or go camping and still keep your phone juiced up. With a power bank, though, you can always get a recharge – even when you’re far from home. And while we’ve seen some superb long-life smartphones recently, you can still find you’re running out of charge before you can get near a socket, especially if you’re playing games or streaming video. Screens keep getting bigger and processors more powerful, but if there’s one thing that doesn’t seem to improve with today’s mobile devices, it’s the battery’s ability to last the whole day.

E xs metro last light11/14/2023 ![]() The game opens up with players reprising their role as Artyom as he is sent to the surface in search of the only surviving Dark One. From there, you’ll have to navigate an incredibly hostile world ripe with not only horribly mutated monsters, but with the ever present threat of war from the Reich and the Reds as they look to wipe out the Polis.įans of Metro 2033 will be thrilled to know that the chilling atmosphere has been recreated damn near perfectly. During the few occurrences where you find yourself around “civilization,” you’ll overhear conversations discussing how bleak their life is as they cry into their mushroom soup. Picking through corpses in hopes that I could find an unused air filter for my gas mask on the surface while silently praying that the myriad of beasts didn’t see me never failed to keep me on the edge of my seat. And when I found myself crawling through abandoned metro tunnels, I felt an overwhelming sense of loneliness. Very few pieces of media convey their atmosphere this well, and it’s almost worth playing through the game just to experience this alone. To top it all off, the game knows exactly what type of atmosphere it’s created, and just how to use it against you. ![]() In Metro 2033, the claustrophobic tunnel system was by far the greatest danger, whereas in Last Light you can never really feel safe anywhere. The surface especially carries its own brand of terror as I felt completely exposed and vulnerable from the very moment I put boots on the soil until I was able to retreat underground again. While I saw remnants of society all around me, this world now belonged to the monstrosities that surrounded me and I was a foreigner.

Lap and plaster walls11/14/2023 ![]() You can simply use a stud finder to find the perfect spot these days, but this won’t work reliably on older homes. Imagine hanging a 50 pound framed piece of artwork on nothing but drywall.Įnsuring your wall décor is anchored to these studs means they’ll stay in place until you decide to take them down again. Studs are the wooden or metal beams that support the walls in your house. This means that your standard stud finder won’t be able to detect a change in density because it’s all dense.Īnytime you want to hang something on your wall- whether it’s 0.5 pounds or 50 pounds- you want it to be attached to a stud. Vertical studs, wooden beams, and plaster make up the structure of older homes. Here are five ways to find a stud in a plaster wall: How To Find a Stud in a Plaster Wall But don’t worry- there are still ways to locate studs in these walls! So what’s the solution to finding studs in older homes? Some people say to use a magnet, but that also won’t work if you have metal lath. And if the lath is a metal wire type, instead of older wood lath, a stud finder will produce false readings. Plaster can be too thick or dense to find a stud with common stud finders, which is probably why you’re finding that these don’t work. These were “wet” applied walls (not to be confused with the similar-sounding “wet wall” that contains plumbing pipes). Learning how to find a stud in a plaster wall takes some patience, but we have a few tricks up our sleeve that will save you time.īack in the day, home builders had to trowel the wall finish on with plaster over a lath base (kind of like how stucco is applied). But on some older homes from the mid-1970s and prior, there’s a good chance you may have plaster walls instead. As before, use a low-grade sandpaper to gently smooth the edges of the repairs area so that it blends in with the surrounding wall. It’s pretty simple to find a stud in common drywall. When this is dry, apply a finishing layer so that it is up to the level of the surrounding plasterwork. This coat should reach a level just below the surrounding plasterwork. When you have applied this set of render and left it for a few days to fully set, you should apply another coat on top of it. A new coat of render will be needed and this will need to be firmly applied to the laths so that it gets forced between them. To repair a wall in this situation, it is similar to repairing a small hole in the wall as outlined in the previous step. If the laths are still intact, you can be relieved that no major repairs are needed. Step 2 - How to Repair Larger Holes in Lath and Plaster Walls ![]() This will help to ensure that the repaired area will blend in seamlessly with the rest of the wall. When each application of the filler is dry, you should gently rub it down with sandpaper to get a completely smooth surface. You may also need to apply a second coat. To make it as level as possible, use the scraper held at a 45-degree angle over the surface to smoothen it out. You can then apply the filler to the hole, making sure that it is thoroughly level. Using a sponge, dampen the sides of the plasterwork inside the hole. Mix the plaster filler as directed to by the instructions that come with it. To prepare for applying the filler, try to undercut the plasterwork at the edges so that there is a good grip available for the new filler. First, you should be sure to clean the surface from any loose plaster. Repairing small holes in plasterwork is much simpler than replacing laths or fixing major holes in the wall. Primary arms 3x prism scope11/14/2023 ![]() ![]() Similar ACOGs weight about the same as they should. If it were any lighter, its optical qualities would be reduced. It's the number of lenses and their quality. Light optics should be treated with suspicion. But do not take it as a criticism at all. I am sure the engineers considered that option and decided against it. I likely won't ever do that and I understand it's glued and won't remove it but wish it came bolted so it could be removed. Things I don't particularly care for: The mini-rail on top where you can mount an RMR or such. You might need that power in daylight but the regular reticle should be visible in daylight just fine. I don't know why you would want to crank it up to 8 or 10 or 11 but it's there. There are 11 power settings and they appear to be evenly spaced with increments that are noticeable. On low illum settings, it's evenly illuminated and remains sharp. Then there is the outer ring with the range finding feature built-in and I wont' even attempt the MOA guess on that, probably at least 20MOA, maybe more. I am not sure, maybe 4MOA? If it's in the manual, I missed it. I absolutely love the 1MOA inner dot for precision and the middle ring which is. That means that you have a lot more room for error where you place your eye. (The manual says 10.3mm so let's go with that, it's just 30mm / 3x = 10mm). The 3x has a 30mm objective resulting in a generous 10mm exit pupil size. It's compact and uses ACOG mounts, another great brainstorm. I kind of prefer that to the fiber optic thing/tritium on ACOGs. ![]() The 2032 Lithium cell providing illumination is another good idea. But, take the cap off, set the diopters and then put it back on. Secondly, the scope caps are a good idea. I haven't found out yet the max adjustable value of the focus ring, that is, how far it will go in its adjustment and just how much myopia it can accommodate. The diopter adjustment is a huge plus over ACOGs. I don't know if it accommodates the other way, the + prescriptions. Meaning if your eyes are bad, have myopia, and your prescription is -2.5D, you can adjust to that -2.5 Diopters and use the optic presumably without eyeglasses. The eye piece (not the objective lense) is adjustable for the override past infinity. Some interesting features of the 3x optic that the ACOG does not have: The black reticle that's always there and you can turn on a red LED that lights up the reticle, quantified in 11 power settings. I do not see any inferior optical qualities. The optical clarity is as good as in similar 3x or 3.5x ACOGs. This is just a superficial at first glance type review, haven't had a chance to take it for a test drive.

Louisville slave market11/14/2023 ![]() I've been watching for somewhere between the last 1-2 years on this site, somewhere in that window, have you noticed that there has been a higher recognition on here that the East Coast south-to-north transition area begins somewhere in Central Virginia? I find this fascinating for two reasons, and I know you understand my posting history well enough that my claim has never been that Central VA isn't a part of the South. It was much more a traditional conservative southern state. KY (Cincinnati).įascinating history and the new scholarship by authors such as Anne Marshall have changed what people thought of Kentucky. Kentucky was on the other side of the spectrum.By most accounts Kentucky led the slave trade in both intra-state and interstate slave trade.but here is thing.the number of slaves never decreased over the early to mid 19th century in Kentucky.they became a smaller percentage of white population but their numbers grew such as they did in Louisville and Lexington (which really operated as one regional slave market) According to the 18 census only Virginia and Georgia had more "slave owners" than Kentucky with the highest concentration found the the "Bluegrass Region" which is the horse country in between Louisville, Lexington N. But these migrations changed those cities in that slavery was much less defining than other slave holding cities (with the exception of Richmond). Cities such as Washington DC, Richmond, and to a much lesser degree Baltimore (while still slave holding it resembled northern industriation and was apart of that NE industrial belt) and St Louis became major slave trading centers. New Orleans/Natchez was Louisville's largest trading partner and Louisville was the northern most reach of the Ohio River trade route between the two cities. Regarding Louisville it was the advent of the river boat that made this trade so significant, slaves and livestock went south while goods and immigrants from New Orleans came northward to Louisville. So as you pointed out the upper south (all pretty much extensions of Virginia) found itself with an oversupply of slave lave labor. Due to climate, the economic need for slavery was much greater in the deep south. ![]() It's on Amazon.Īnd there is a really good thesis from an African American Professor Benjamin Lewis Fitzpatrick NEGROES FOR SALE: THE SLAVE TRADE IN ANTEBELLUM KENTUCKY ![]() I would love to.my favorite book that goes into very much detail about this period of Kentucky and after is "Creating a Confederate Kentucky: The Lost Cause and Civil War Memory in a Border State. DC once held that title and I wouldn't doubt if Baltimore did as well, but I haven't seen anything regarding Louisville on that although I'm sure it was a big hub of the domestic slave-trade as an upper South border city. ![]() Obviously New Orleans was the city most known to have held that title, but after the trans-Atlantic slave trade was outlawed and the domestic slave trade (from the upper South to the deep South) ramped up, upper Southern cities saw more of that activity. This is an interesting tidbit and I was wondering if you had a source you could point me to that would corroborate this.

Facts about gladys aylward11/14/2023 ![]() Gladys Aylward’s story has been turned into an inspiring children’s biography. ![]() But her heart was still beating for China, so, in her late fifties, she travelled to the island of Taiwan, where she opened another orphanage. Life in China had become very dangerous for Gladys, and she had to go back to England. Gladys adopted a few children and opened an orphanage-a home for children with no family. Her faith in God helped her on many occasions when it looked as if there was no hope. When the Japanese attacked China, Gladys worked very hard at keeping people safe. The Chinese emperor wanted to put an end to the tradition of binding little girls’ feet in order to keep them small. The mandarin, a very important man, became one of Gladys’s best friends, and he offered her a job as “foot inspector”. She helped Jeannie to run a guesthouse for tired travelers, where they would read them stories from the Bible every night. Though she wasn’t welcome at first, with time Gladys earned the trust of those around her. With a big smile on her face, she boarded the train.Īfter a long and rather scary journey involving trains, ships, wolves and angry men, Gladys arrived in China. She also had a saucepan and a kettle tied to the bag. On October 15th Gladys packed two suitcases-one for her clothes and the other for tins of food, biscuits, tea, coffee and hard-boiled eggs. And every penny she got she would put towards her train ticket. Gladys worked as a housemaid and picked up any extra job that she could find: sewing, waitressing, cleaning and more. Jeannie agreed, provided that Gladys would pay for her journey there. When she heard that Jeannie Lawson, an elderly missionary in China, needed a young woman to help her, Gladys offered to go. Sadly, she didn’t pass her theology exam and was told that she couldn’t go to China after all.īut Gladys knew in her heart that she had to go. While Gladys was attending church in her twenties, she felt called to serve God in China.ĭetermined to follow her dream, Gladys enrolled at missionary school. Poema a sor juana ines de la cruz11/14/2023 ![]() Unlike plaster, drywall does not require the installation of lathe over the framing. If your project requires speed, low cost, and reduced labor, drywall is likely your best option. Drywall makes up the walls and ceilings of most structures in the United States and has largely replaced plaster in residential construction. Why Would I Use Drywall?ĭrywall is used today because it is inexpensive, fast, and simple to install. Modern design trends such as art deco often utilize plaster to draw emphasis to a visual element in the room, like artwork. Plaster dries very hard and is infinitely repairable, which is why structures built with it centuries ago still look great. In the modern world, plaster is more of an art form, used in the repair of both historic structures and the design of modern buildings. Although the plaster tended to be lime-based, its use in fresco artwork throughout Europe essentially guaranteed it would never completely go out of style. Drywall has been around for decades, but until its introduction plaster had been the go-to solution for centuries. One common use of plaster is in the repair of older structures. ![]() Plaster is still widely used today, even though drywall has greatly replaced it in modern construction. Drywall finishing also usually dries in a day or two, while one coat of plaster can take several days to dry. Plaster, on the other hand, requires application of the material over the entire surface multiple times. Most drywall installations are finished to a level 3 finish, which only requires finishing of the joints and fasteners. Drywall does not require the level of skill plaster installation does, making it a popular choice for do-it-yourselfers.Īnother advantage drywall has over plaster involves finishing. Special drywall tools have been developed to make the process even quicker, such as screw guns and self-adhesive joint tape. Drywallĭrywall is also installed by hand, but because the material is pre-formed into sheets, it installs much faster than plaster. The plaster is then applied to the lathe by hand up to three times to form a durable surface. Lathe can be either metal or wood (metal is the most common), which is attached to the wall to form a grid pattern. ![]() Plaster requires something to attach to, so the first step in a plaster project is the installation of lathe. One disadvantage of plaster is that it requires more effort to install, and the process is slower. In comparison, drywall panels are often installed in minutes and can apply a half inch of material in a single pass. Plaster often requires at least three coats of material to achieve a thickness of a quarter inch. ![]() Drywall however, can usually be installed by a novice with a few simple hand tools. Plaster installation requires skill not only to apply the material, but to mix the correct consistency as well. In most situations, plaster will be more difficult to install than drywall. Is Plaster Harder to Install Than Drywall? Today, we will dig a little deeper into the application of each material and suggest a few pros and cons of each. Plaster is a pliable material often made from gypsum that is applied to pre-installed lathe to form a flat surface. source: ĭrywall incorporates gypsum between two thick sheets of paper to form a panel. What is the difference between plaster and drywall? Both seem synonymous with walls and ceilings, so how are they different? Both drywall and plaster are made from gypsum materials, so the main difference is how the two are made and installed.
